SUBJECT: LITHUANIA SUPPORTS STRONG U.S. ACTIONS ON HUMAN
RIGHTS AT UN

REF: SECSTATE 93981

¶1. Rita Kazragiene, head of the MFA's UN Division, told us
on September 4 that the GOL was glad to see the USG take an
active role on human rights at UNGA, particularly since the
USG limited its involvement with the HRC. She said that the
GOL is likely to support all the USG's human rights
initiatives in the Third Committee. She also said that the
GOL in general does not support no action motions. She added
that the GOL's mission in Geneva has a renewed focus on human
rights and she expects the GOL to increase its attention on
human rights in general over the next year.

¶2. Kestutis Vaskelevicius, assistant adviser to the
President, told us on September 4 that the GOL's positions on
human rights correspond with those of the USG. He added that
a strong stance by the USG on human rights is essential for
continued progress.
