SUBJECT: LITHUANIAN POLICE CLOSE AN ILLEGAL CD PLANT

REF: VILNIUS 58

¶1. On April 21, Lithuanian Police completed a long-term undercover
operation by closing an illegal CD-R and DVD-R production facility
in the city of Siauliai. The owner of a computer store and internet
cafe also ran a small CD plant at his home and was supplying the
entire Siauliai region with pirated movies, computer software, and
games. The material was distributed through a well-developed
network of individual resellers. During the search of the
production facility, police confiscated 3,700 CDs and two PCs used
for downloading material from the internet. According to police,
the confiscated goods are worth 100,000 litas (about 38,500 USD) at
legal prices. They have started a pretrial investigation.

¶2. COMMENT: This bust shows that Lithuanian authorities continue
to take IPR protection seriously. Post will continue reporting on
GOL moves to combat IPR violations.
